Share @ Voice: F as in Fat 2009

Here is the link. F as in Fat.
This article with these statistics is startling. To be honest I was just searching the web looking for data because I got motivated because of the book I am reading. I came across this website and was absolutely stunned. According to this article obesity rates in adults didnt even decrease in any states this last year but INCREASED in 23 states....If you click on the link you can look at each state and find the percentage of children obesity and adult obesity rates per state.
Just a quick fact , Minnesota has the 31st highest rate of obesity in America. I guess thats not to bad considering there is 50 states. but seriouslly ... SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!!!! The hardest part of this is that I have a neighboor who lives right across the ally from me back at home in Minneapolis where I am from and he is heavily obese. It scares me because I know whats going to happen if his parents dont help make a change.  Until than have a good one.

Read 'n' Seed: First Quarter of Book "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

There are 6 parts in my book and I covered two of them which is 70 pages of the 250 pages. First I am going to talk about the signifigant things that I learned throughout the two parts that I cov ered. First off obesity is a trend that started in the 1970's!. Also the The World Health Organization also know as WHO says that in the year of 200 there were 300 million adults who were obese. 300 million...wow. Another fact is the According to the New York Times in 2006 medical costs for obesity were about $100 billion per year..
Supply and Demand is also covered right away. The book talks about how technology increases and food is alot easier to supply than can become cheaper and more abundance in product than there is more food for people to get. According to the book the supply curve is is shifting to the right , which means that food prices are going down and consumption is increasing. Also another point made is the increase in food supply is because of our switch to processed food.
Another thing I learned is that Government plays a role by setting rules that allow the whole function of food processing to be safe...hmm
Also the Department of Health in cities have to check diners and such to make sure there are up to par on there cleanliness.
The book also starts to get into the actual debate on obesity and whether or not its the individual, government or business.
The first part talks about the spread of obesity and that in the early 1960's the average American Male weighed in at 168 pounds. The same time frame the average women weighed in at about 142 pounds. Today the average male is 180 pounds and the female averages 152 pounds . (page 15) Going off of this the book also talks about how the obersity epidemic is spreading beyond the US and other countries are adopting our lifestyle as technology is building in there countries. The authors main thoughts about this is that knowledge as well as lifestyle is is spreading. Cultures are converting with each other and so on.
According to a chart in the book source: OECD Health Statitistics (2000) The US has a percent of obesity rate at almost 30 percent.
Part 2
This part is titled Obesity and the individual
Right away in the first part of this portion of the book the authors wrote some startling data...Children obesity has almost doubled among children aged 2-5 years old old since the 1970s. It also talks about how type 2 diabetes is a ciritical consequence of childhood obesity. This portion of the book will be about mostly children obesity and the effects it has on them because they are unaware mostly of the future consequences of being obese. The other portion of the section also talks about how economic framework happens for children with weight problems. Such as the constraints like poverty, physical activity etc.
One point brought up in the book is why children may be in different weight classes is because children may have different ideals in what weight they want to be.
The chapter also talks about single women that are mothers and turn to cheaper foods such as fast food and how the governments implications on society can affect children. Even with media and advertising because children see these advertisements all the time.

Summary:
I think this is a very important topic and I am very passionate about it. I understand one of the biggest problems is the lack if knowledge people may have and how to feed there children. I think more knowledge and help should be provided for parents and teachers. I mean the only adds kids seem to know on tv is fast food diners and video games. I think we could change it by advertising physcial activies and encouraging them as well. I know alot of my friends who are bigger werent allowed to play sports. I think its ashame because your not allowing your kid an outlet to get some fitness in. I think this is very important because I know when I have children if I am blessed enough, I dont want them going through what I went through. These children are our future leaders and we should take it upon ourselves to help them and not just turn them away.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 2: My SMART Goal

Here we are into week 2 of the smart goals. My smart goal was to walk to school 4 out of the 5 days of the week. I did awesome on achieving my goal. I have been walking everyday actually and also walked to the grocery store, even though it was hard I felt alot better afterwards.
The strategies that helped me accomplish this was to dress for the weather. The challenges I faced was the cold weather. It sucked to be honest. But what made it easier if that I have a locker at school so bringing a jacket isnt a big deal so I could stay warm.
The feelings I experience were satisfaction, in knowing that I am helping the world and myself by walking to school.
I learned that all you need to do is focus on the goal and stay positive and you can be succesful.
My plans for next week...I am going to modify mine a little bit. Since I was able to walk everyday, I am going to continue that and vow to walk everyday to and from school for the remainder of the ten weeks through whatever kind of weather it may bring.
To everyone good luck!

Share @ Voice: Al Gore's Global Warming.

Hey everyone!
Well I decided to do some research and look up some articles and read some stuff and I came upon this article that I will mention in a second after I tell you a little about it first. FIRST OFF I am not in any way going against what Al Gore is campaining about the issue of Glabal Warming. I am just giving a little preveiw on the other side of what other people might think and just to give another insight. The reason I am chosing to do this is because I do not trust politicians. I do not care what data they show me or what they say or anything in that matter. IN MY OWN personal opinion I think that MAJORITY of them only care about the money. But this article titled "Why Wont Al Gore Debate" by Joseph L. Bast has some pretty good information and also opened my mind to some other things. So check it out and if you disagree/agree feel free to let me know how you feel!. Until next time stay safe and warm.

Eye Opener: CSPI

I chose the activity of Take the Tour of The Food. The webpage shows you different elements of food supply and gives you different statistics.
Right away the first link that I clicked on bothered me a little bit. The first stat that I looked at talked about fertilizer and said that the 22 billion pounds of fertilizer that US livestock consumes annually also requires as much energy as to provide a years worth of power to 1 million Americans. That right there just kind of makes me sick to the stomach. Plus the raw materials that are used in fertizliers pollute the water.
When I clicked on the hospital tab, a tab which I was mostly interested in it said that the overall cost of diet related diseases is about $90 billion annually.....I dont even know what to say to that. Are we as people really that bad! Thats ridiculous. ...Im sorry. I know America is going through an obesity "epidemic" but its also one thing if people dont even try.
Lets talk about the slaughter house tab... I'll be honest I do like meat and always willl. I tried the vegetarion thing and the lifestyle just doesnt fit me. I play hockey and meat is an essentail for my muscles and to keep me going. I think the way people kill the animals is wrong. I have seen other videos which I will not post on here because of the violence and I dont want to look for any but another side of me says killing animals to produce food for people is an essential. If you disagree I do understand, but humans are the dominating race of the world and make it go round and round.
Pesticides..I dont like them. I dont like the fact that according to the tab 181 million pounds of it were distributed out. Seems a little excessive to me but thats just me.
Coming back to the hopsital detail earlier written that $90 billion were used in diet related diseases...well yeah when we eat 11 pounds more of read meat and 53 more pounds of poultry and 24! more pounds of cheese per an American each year than people in 1950's! That was outragoues. Those numbers just show you that people in America are eating way more these days and I already its a proven fact, but its like cmon people at least try.

Summary
After reading these statistics one thing jumps out at me that makes me upset because its something that I am passionate about. The hospital spending on diet related diseases and how Americans are eating way more than back in the day. Makes me sick... it really does. People arent even trying and there just giving up there body to food. I hope we can make a change and thats a big reason why I want to work in the nutrition and obesity field.

Thanks for reading everyone! have a good week.
