Share and Voice: Guy in the Ally

Today is December 17th and on my way to the store this morning there was this man walking through the ally going through garbage cans, which I thought was kind of odd because the garbage was picked up the other day. So being my last day in Duluth I decided to ask the man what hes doing just casually... So after speaking to the guy and getting a whirl wind of information this guy who is going through the ally is a secret santa. He goes through allys and looks for broken items or things that he could use to make presents for kids in need. I was very hesitant to believe it at first, but than I thought about it and the passion this guy had in his eyes and the way he spoke was very real. I believed him and then I thanked him for what hes doing. I think its important that we dont pass judgement on people regardless of any situation because alot of the times we dont even know the whole situation were just looking from the outside in.

Share @ Voice: How does aclohol affect stress?

Alcohol. I found this article because I was searching around the internet trying to find things on alcohol and if it even actually reduces stress, because I know I have had times when I think alcohol is the answer to make your self less stressed so I wanted to find out.
MY finding....
Alcohol does not reduce stress... The few different things that it does do though is it temporily affects your perceptions and affects nuetrotransmittors in your brain. The long term affect of this i s actually depressing not uplifting. So my conclusion to this is that alcohol is not the answer when you are trying to reduce the stress. Working out or something active to get the natural endorphins is alot better of an option.

Reflections: Weeks 13 & 14 and Overall Reflection

WEEK 13

During this week we went on a trip to the GOODWILL. I never knew that GOODWILL was a place where it like a helping plan for people with disabilites to help them get jobs in the future. I think thats awesome. Seeing how the store works and walking through the factory really opened my eyes to how things get moved through the world and how they end up in certain spot. I also liked the game we played where we had to pretend to buy stuff because it gave me alot of good ideas and it just shows there are different ways to get things or make things that are alot more eco friendly. We also wrote out letters to a public official. I feel really good about this activity because it gives us a chance to help make some good.

WEEK 14

Seeing all the projects was really cool. It was nice to see the creative side in everyone. Also I liked doing the online assignments because I learned that I am not so knowledgable about certain fitness things as I thought I was.

Here is a picture of my project:

My project was a guitar. It was made out of a shoe box. A Ron Diaz Bottle *( I am 22 ). and an old hockey skate lace and I decorated it with some little debbie snack boxes.

Overall
Overall this course has tought me alot and has brought me out of my shell. I always had an open mind about things but my shyness always made it difficult. Now I just go into things with an open mind and always think before I react. Also this course has given me a different aspect of opinion in different ways and has also opened my eyes to realize different things that are going on in the world. I am very thankful for this class and want to thank Dr.V for being a beyong excellent Professor. Have a good one.

Eye Opener: Online Learning Activites

The online learning activities that I did were Amandas, Jakes and Kristins.

After taking Amandas Fitness quiz I scored a 62.

Organized outline of what we were learning than had a fitness quiz.
What does your score mean?
You're standing just outside the ranks of 'fitness buff', so don't stop now. Your score indicates that you've got a good general knowledge of fitness, but are a little hazy on the details. With the recent fitness craze, you should easily be able to find the information necessary to fine-tune your fitness knowledge. With the proper knowledge, you will not only be able to optimize your fitness routine, but you'll also be prepared to avoid injury.

Jakes activity about childhood obesity.

This lesson was about childhood obesity. He had posted information then had a quiz to take at the end.
Questions1. What % of children worldwide are either obese or overweight? 10 %
2. True or False? Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child's health or wellbeing. True
3. What are some early effects in the psychosocial system of childhood obesity?anxiety and poor self esteem
4. The current generation of children has consumed higher levels of ___soft drinks___ and __Fast food_______ than ever before.
5. True or False? Diet and Genetics are the two largest factors leading towards childhood obesity. False

Kristins Activity

This activity provided information on smoking and then took a quiz.

I recieved 90 out of the 100 possible points. I thought it was a very informative lesson.

I thought all these lessons were very informative and I enjoyed this alot.

Read 'n' Seed 6: Final Review of "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

Overview!!!
This book was one of the most interesting books I have ever read in a very long time, and I dont like reading at all. It gave me an in depth look at alot of different aspects on obesity and how society may or may not affect it and how government may or may not affect it. I am also glad I chose this book because learning the things I did will help me with my career in the future to be able to help people who struggle with obese problems.

3 most signifigant things:
-The main thing was that food companies do in fact target kids and obese people.
-The second most signifigant thing is that I learned that obese people who go get help start denying they need help once the doctors let them know how rough of shape there in.
- Third and lastly the book never really "said" this straight out but I got the feeling that the government wants obese people because they treat them as money makers for them.

What does it mean to me?
It means everything to me, this is down my alley for career paths and gaining the extra knowledge that I was able to obtain through this book is really going to help me in the future to be able to understand the issue better as a whole.

Recommendations?
I would definetaly recommend this book to anyone even if you are not trying to pursue anything in this field. The book gives you a better insight into our society as a whole when it comes to the obese population and can really open your eyes to the issues of obesity.

Share and Voice: My experience in this class

Hello,
I wanted to take this time to reflect on this semester as a whole and talk about the experience I have had in this class.
I will be honest..coming into this class I was hesitant and afraid as I am with every class that I take because I am an extremely shy person. But as the weeks came and gone and the videos we watched and even the trip to goodwill my perception of everything had changed. Instead of facing classes and new topics with hesitation, I started to come in with a real big open mind and with no hesitation at all. I have learned so much in this class and would recommend it to anyone even if they don't have to take it because it really creates a different slate for your life. I just wanted to take some time to get that out there and even though im quiet it was really cool getting to hear all of your opinions and emotions and hope the best for everyone in the future.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 9 : Overall Project Reflection

What was your smart goal? and did it change?
My goal was to walk to school each day during the school week and I changed it these last few weeks adding no alcohol and also adding a salad to one of my meals each week.
What helped you be successful? What things got in your way? How can you address these in the future?Wanting to save gas and get into better shape were things that helped make the change succesful for me. The things that got in my way were the holidays and rainy days. I should probably get a rain coat or an umbrella or something, well not in this case some snow boots.
How did you benefit from this project? What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about behavior change?I benefited saving a ton of gas from this project and getting the endorphins flowing every morning by walking to schol. I learned that if you keep at something it can become a habit. I learned that even if I dont want to do something you just have to do it and you will feel better.
How did others and/or the environment benefit from you changing this behavior?
Well I barely used my car doing this whole project and if I saw trash on the way I would pick it up. I think my change was for the good.

Advocacy Project: Letter to a Public Official.

Keith Ellison
Minneapolis Office2100
Plymouth Avenue N
Minneapolis, MN 55411
Phone: (612) 522-1212

Congressman Keith Ellison,

My name is Keith Enstad and I am a student at the University of Minnesota Duluth Majoring in Health Education. I think that its very important in the under privelaged communities in Minneapolis to have a safe place for children to go and have activities so they can have a place to go to stay out of trouble.

Thats why I am asking you to vote yes for SF2039 East Phillips cultural and community center cultural fitness and wellness center grant appropriation. This bill deserves to be passed because I am from Minneapolis and see the struggle children have with obesity and not having a place to go to stay out or trouble.

This bill has been introduced and sent to the Chair of Cultural and Outdorr Resources and Finance Division. I strongly encourage you to vote yes because this wil only bring a positive movement for the community. If you have any question, comments or concerns feel free to contact me with the information below.

Sincerely,
Keith Enstad
