Share and Voice: Guy in the Ally

Today is December 17th and on my way to the store this morning there was this man walking through the ally going through garbage cans, which I thought was kind of odd because the garbage was picked up the other day. So being my last day in Duluth I decided to ask the man what hes doing just casually... So after speaking to the guy and getting a whirl wind of information this guy who is going through the ally is a secret santa. He goes through allys and looks for broken items or things that he could use to make presents for kids in need. I was very hesitant to believe it at first, but than I thought about it and the passion this guy had in his eyes and the way he spoke was very real. I believed him and then I thanked him for what hes doing. I think its important that we dont pass judgement on people regardless of any situation because alot of the times we dont even know the whole situation were just looking from the outside in.

Share @ Voice: How does aclohol affect stress?

Alcohol. I found this article because I was searching around the internet trying to find things on alcohol and if it even actually reduces stress, because I know I have had times when I think alcohol is the answer to make your self less stressed so I wanted to find out.
MY finding....
Alcohol does not reduce stress... The few different things that it does do though is it temporily affects your perceptions and affects nuetrotransmittors in your brain. The long term affect of this i s actually depressing not uplifting. So my conclusion to this is that alcohol is not the answer when you are trying to reduce the stress. Working out or something active to get the natural endorphins is alot better of an option.

Reflections: Weeks 13 & 14 and Overall Reflection

WEEK 13

During this week we went on a trip to the GOODWILL. I never knew that GOODWILL was a place where it like a helping plan for people with disabilites to help them get jobs in the future. I think thats awesome. Seeing how the store works and walking through the factory really opened my eyes to how things get moved through the world and how they end up in certain spot. I also liked the game we played where we had to pretend to buy stuff because it gave me alot of good ideas and it just shows there are different ways to get things or make things that are alot more eco friendly. We also wrote out letters to a public official. I feel really good about this activity because it gives us a chance to help make some good.

WEEK 14

Seeing all the projects was really cool. It was nice to see the creative side in everyone. Also I liked doing the online assignments because I learned that I am not so knowledgable about certain fitness things as I thought I was.

Here is a picture of my project:

My project was a guitar. It was made out of a shoe box. A Ron Diaz Bottle *( I am 22 ). and an old hockey skate lace and I decorated it with some little debbie snack boxes.

Overall
Overall this course has tought me alot and has brought me out of my shell. I always had an open mind about things but my shyness always made it difficult. Now I just go into things with an open mind and always think before I react. Also this course has given me a different aspect of opinion in different ways and has also opened my eyes to realize different things that are going on in the world. I am very thankful for this class and want to thank Dr.V for being a beyong excellent Professor. Have a good one.

Eye Opener: Online Learning Activites

The online learning activities that I did were Amandas, Jakes and Kristins.

After taking Amandas Fitness quiz I scored a 62.

Organized outline of what we were learning than had a fitness quiz.
What does your score mean?
You're standing just outside the ranks of 'fitness buff', so don't stop now. Your score indicates that you've got a good general knowledge of fitness, but are a little hazy on the details. With the recent fitness craze, you should easily be able to find the information necessary to fine-tune your fitness knowledge. With the proper knowledge, you will not only be able to optimize your fitness routine, but you'll also be prepared to avoid injury.

Jakes activity about childhood obesity.

This lesson was about childhood obesity. He had posted information then had a quiz to take at the end.
Questions1. What % of children worldwide are either obese or overweight? 10 %
2. True or False? Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child's health or wellbeing. True
3. What are some early effects in the psychosocial system of childhood obesity?anxiety and poor self esteem
4. The current generation of children has consumed higher levels of ___soft drinks___ and __Fast food_______ than ever before.
5. True or False? Diet and Genetics are the two largest factors leading towards childhood obesity. False

Kristins Activity

This activity provided information on smoking and then took a quiz.

I recieved 90 out of the 100 possible points. I thought it was a very informative lesson.

I thought all these lessons were very informative and I enjoyed this alot.

Read 'n' Seed 6: Final Review of "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

Overview!!!
This book was one of the most interesting books I have ever read in a very long time, and I dont like reading at all. It gave me an in depth look at alot of different aspects on obesity and how society may or may not affect it and how government may or may not affect it. I am also glad I chose this book because learning the things I did will help me with my career in the future to be able to help people who struggle with obese problems.

3 most signifigant things:
-The main thing was that food companies do in fact target kids and obese people.
-The second most signifigant thing is that I learned that obese people who go get help start denying they need help once the doctors let them know how rough of shape there in.
- Third and lastly the book never really "said" this straight out but I got the feeling that the government wants obese people because they treat them as money makers for them.

What does it mean to me?
It means everything to me, this is down my alley for career paths and gaining the extra knowledge that I was able to obtain through this book is really going to help me in the future to be able to understand the issue better as a whole.

Recommendations?
I would definetaly recommend this book to anyone even if you are not trying to pursue anything in this field. The book gives you a better insight into our society as a whole when it comes to the obese population and can really open your eyes to the issues of obesity.

Share and Voice: My experience in this class

Hello,
I wanted to take this time to reflect on this semester as a whole and talk about the experience I have had in this class.
I will be honest..coming into this class I was hesitant and afraid as I am with every class that I take because I am an extremely shy person. But as the weeks came and gone and the videos we watched and even the trip to goodwill my perception of everything had changed. Instead of facing classes and new topics with hesitation, I started to come in with a real big open mind and with no hesitation at all. I have learned so much in this class and would recommend it to anyone even if they don't have to take it because it really creates a different slate for your life. I just wanted to take some time to get that out there and even though im quiet it was really cool getting to hear all of your opinions and emotions and hope the best for everyone in the future.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 9 : Overall Project Reflection

What was your smart goal? and did it change?
My goal was to walk to school each day during the school week and I changed it these last few weeks adding no alcohol and also adding a salad to one of my meals each week.
What helped you be successful? What things got in your way? How can you address these in the future?Wanting to save gas and get into better shape were things that helped make the change succesful for me. The things that got in my way were the holidays and rainy days. I should probably get a rain coat or an umbrella or something, well not in this case some snow boots.
How did you benefit from this project? What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about behavior change?I benefited saving a ton of gas from this project and getting the endorphins flowing every morning by walking to schol. I learned that if you keep at something it can become a habit. I learned that even if I dont want to do something you just have to do it and you will feel better.
How did others and/or the environment benefit from you changing this behavior?
Well I barely used my car doing this whole project and if I saw trash on the way I would pick it up. I think my change was for the good.

Advocacy Project: Letter to a Public Official.

Keith Ellison
Minneapolis Office2100
Plymouth Avenue N
Minneapolis, MN 55411
Phone: (612) 522-1212

Congressman Keith Ellison,

My name is Keith Enstad and I am a student at the University of Minnesota Duluth Majoring in Health Education. I think that its very important in the under privelaged communities in Minneapolis to have a safe place for children to go and have activities so they can have a place to go to stay out of trouble.

Thats why I am asking you to vote yes for SF2039 East Phillips cultural and community center cultural fitness and wellness center grant appropriation. This bill deserves to be passed because I am from Minneapolis and see the struggle children have with obesity and not having a place to go to stay out or trouble.

This bill has been introduced and sent to the Chair of Cultural and Outdorr Resources and Finance Division. I strongly encourage you to vote yes because this wil only bring a positive movement for the community. If you have any question, comments or concerns feel free to contact me with the information below.

Sincerely,

Reflections: Weeks: 11 and 12

This semester is going by really fast.....and I am really happy I got the oppritunity to take this class. Every week opens my eyes to new things to think about and create an opinion about and to research things as well.

Week 11
This week we started off by doing a enviromental literacy activity where we got into groups and basically defined what enviromental literacy was. I think this was good because we got exposed to different apsects of the enviroment and new terms. We also did another activity by looking at different items and thinking of things that we could use them for. I thought the best thing was the mini coffin deal. We all had some funny things for it.

Week 12
This week we learned what blog hopping was. I think that is pretty cool actually. We also did out photo essays and there were alot of cool ones and it was really cool to see all the different ideas all the classmates had. In my opinion this was one of my favorite assignments we had because I after 22 years I finally realized how my neighborhood is.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 9 : My SMART Goal

My health goal for this week was to walk to school every day and to quit drinking and have a salad for a meal each day.
How did it go?
This week is probably by far one of the worse weeks I had. I did walk to school every day but I did not follow through with having a salad every day. The holiday made it extremely hard. Also with the drinking part, I did fail with that to. I am pretty upset with myself and I am hoping to finish strong. It was just hard being home and my friends like to go out alot so it was hard to avoid the drinking aspect.
FUTURE GOALS...
I am still going to continue my plan and just work alot harder at completeing these last few weeks or so.
Until next time good luck to everyone and good luck!

Eye Opener: Photo Essay

My story.... When driving back to Minneapolis for the turkey day looking out my car window, I was wondering to myself through everything that we have learned being from a big city... how does the government and factories treat my neighborhood...I guess I never really thought about how we are treated... so I went on a journey with my dad to capture images and see if the government and factories treat my city and I as an expendable means..... Here is my story...
The train they planted in neighborhoods and tore down houses for…

The Back yards to alot of the residents in my neighborhood.

Good landscaping?

Whats up neighbor? The factory next to this house was where they use to make and store dog food…

Kind of cool having a loading dock right next door? Not.

Piles of dirt from highway construction for someones back yard…I also asked one of the residents how the conditions are and they said “through the night all your house does is rumble from traffic, and during the day its even worse when they’re drilling” he wanted to be annonomous

An elementary school with a run down play ground, next to a real busy road and in a bad neighborhood.

This here is a run down train track and electric pole and a plant right in the back yard of houses

Run down train track...housing to the left, factory to the right with huge smoke stacks...

Gun shop right next to section 8 housing…. Weird.

This has really opened my eyes to the world I grew up and live in. I never noticed til now…

Share and Voice: East Phillips Neighborhood

Doing some research on my advocacy topic I found out that East Phillips Neighborhood committee also known as EPIC, went to war to fight against a wood burner right in the middle of East Phillips Neighborhood! According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) the power plant would be;".... a Major Source of Hazardous Air Pollutants".

I think this is a great thing that people went to war and fought against this and won. This affects me because I do live by this nieghborhood and having this plan would have been extemely dangerous for the children of the neighborhood! I am proud of epic and hope there future plans continue to better the neighborhood!

Read 'n' Seed 5: 4th Quarter of Book "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

Hey everyone and happy thanksgiving!

This is must mean that our semester i s coming to a close if this is the last posts for our books! sad times..

This time I read the last two sections of the book which would be section 5 and section 6. IN total the pages were 62 pages and section 5 focused on tobacco as a control model to decrease the problem with obesity and also economic and cultural effects of obesity.

IN part 6 they talked about a policy framework for confronting the obesity problem.

Section 5

According to the CDC smoking has declined from about 50% in adults to about 20% in adults since the year of 1964 when the Surgeons General Report came out. On the other hand according to (Mokdad 2005) the obesiy rate in the last decade has risen by 74% and also 1 out of every 5 adults is also reported as obese. The problem I see here is that as a country we havnt really found a good way to reduce the problem of obesity but in cigeratte smoking there seems to be some conclusion according to the statistics. I think it is important that we work harder as a country to find a way to help solve this problem because 74 PERCENT is a huge incline in percentage.

Another point that the author makes is that just like how smoking industries targeted people, food industries are also doing the same thing. I drove the down the street when Iw as back home for the holiday and I live in the inner city and I swear there are fast food resterraunts like every 10 feet or so. I think what we have to do as a society is to educate the consumer and help them realize what food industries are doing.

Another thing that the author brings up is the Pelham v Mcdonalds case. Thjs case was about a minor, that alledgly got fat and got bad health problems "becuase" she ate Mcdonalds... I think that this is a good thing to bring up but I disagree with the case and in all honesty I disagree with every case against fast food because people make their own decisions to eat there. You put the food in your body they didnt put it in you...

Section 6
This chapter is basically the summary of the whole book and emphasises on how we as people and the government can confront the obesity epidemic and also what are the main causes. SCHOOLS... seem to be one of the biggest causes because of financial issues that arise when it comes to food services. Also being educated on food...not many people truly understand the actual concept on food.

Summary:
I think both of these sections proposed very good information and also have a good outlook on whats to come and hopefully a change can be made!

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 8 : My SMART Goal

mY sMaRt GoAl!
Yo and welcome to another week of some Eco-Chic!
My smart goal was to walk to school all 5 days of the week and also I added some other elements, such as no drinking of alcohol and also replace one of my meals with a salad each day as well.

dID i AcComPliSh iT and what were the challeneges and successes?
Well yes I did accomplish it but...................................................................this week was a little harder than most. I did quit the drinking for the week and it wasnt hard at first but it got harder especially during the weekend and I am out of town for hockey and everyone around you is also drinking. The salad part wasnt hard at all because I love salad and creating them and they just taste good in general I think. When I was a kid I thought different. I must have been a weird kid. Walking to school was pretty easy but the hard part is walking home later when it gets dark earlier and it becomes kinda depressing.
wIlL U CoNtInUe?
I will continue this same goal and I believe the alcohol things will get better. UNtil next time have a good one.

Advocacy Project: Issue Overview

Introduction
The topic that I am focusing on is health and fitness and improving the quality of life through daily activites.
The issue and problem is the lack of physical activity, especially within kids between the ages of 15-18 years of age. Which raises concern for me because being from a large city with a lot of children going to schools where gym has been limited, the children dont have much of an option to do anything physical. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 1 in 7 low income preschool aged child is obese. Which is a deep important concept because something has to be done to help these children because alot of them dont have the resources or help. A community that is trying to address this issue is East Phillips Neighboorhood in Minneapolis. The community is trying to get a fitness center built into there community center for the youth. The legistlation that I am looking at that addresses this is Bill SF2039 East Phillips cultural and community center cultural fitness and wellness center grant appropriation.Th reason for this bill is to get a grant so the community center can build and furnish and equip a safe health and fitness center.
Who is affected by this?
I have looked high and low to try to find some information on this and have came up almost completely empty.... When I am talking about who would be affected I am going to start with who would be affected positevely. East Phillips is in Minneapolis where I am from and its a nieghboorhood that is full of poverty and low in come housing and also crime. Also when I go back home I notice alot of the children in the nieghboorhood probably close to 75% of them have some sort of weight issue. Thats why I think this would affect the community in a positive manner and would be a great thing.
Loses?
The research that I have done which I posted in my last blog, that nothing has been done for a while on this bill except that it was passed onto the cultural chair and finance division. I am going to assume because the information isnt really loaded on this bill that the money is a grant that the nieghboorhood is trying to get which is given by the government and that means it comes from taxes....taxes which people pay. So someone is going to have to pay money for this and it most likely wont be the people of East Phillips because the income is low and its a struggling neighboorhood.
Gains?
The people that would gain, would be the East Phillip community. They would be gaining another facility thats save for children and also is a outlet for them and also a place where they have an option to do physical activity and be healthy.
Consequences?
Once again I am unable to find any official consequences. BUT like I said before the way the community plans on paying for this is through grant money which comes from the government which would be a consequence in a sense that people would have to pay there tax dollars for the place and in turn the people who have to pay those dollars may not be happy with the idea of the fitness center and rebel against it. Another consequence that I can think of, only because I know the neighborhood very well is that it does bring the risk of bringing people that dont get along togethor in the same area, but in the same breathe this may also cease some of the violence in the nieghborhood if the gangs and kids have a common ground with each other.
Economic Issues?
There is no solid number of how much this is going to cost. But the cost that is going to come from the governemt which also comes from tax payers dollars will have an effect on them because the tax payers dollars that would go to pay for this fitness center would probably not use it because most likely they are not from that area.
The economic benefits go towards the community because they would then gain a fitness center for the youth, where the youth could than have a safe area and also start living healthier and become more active.
Social Impact!
The social cost of this issue would be tension between the tax payers who would pay for the community center and the nieghborhood where the comminuty is. This could be a huge social impact...the problem with this is East Phillips neighborhood and full of crime and low income and tax payers may see having there tax money go to this as a waste because of what the community already is. Also a negative social impact is that building somewhere where youth can go in this neighborhood could cause problem with bringing certain individuals togethor. The positive social impact that could arise, is that this health and fitness center could possibly give these kids a common ground and could possibly stop the violence in the future.
Barriers?
The barriers for this issue is the obvious. Where is the money going to come from and will people agree on having there tax dollars going into a fitness center in the hood. How can this problem be solved is a concept that may be really hard to address. But the community does have a board of memebers and having a plan of action and what exactly the money will be spent on would help alot in order for tax payers to understand completely what there money is going into .
Resources
The resources are obvious. The government is the resource that would be used for the grant money for the health center for the neighborhood because that is there plan.
History
The history on this subject is pretty vague. The community has been trying to make some change to better the neighborhood and did build a community center in May of 2009. Also they nieghborhood started a group called EPIC which means East Phillips Improvement Coalition. Epic is a non profit volunteer organization of people in the community that want to help and also be leaders to help the community get better. As far as I have found there hasnt been any official attempts to get a fitness center in the neighborhood because the community center was just put up in May.
Allies & Opponents
The supporters of this issue are obviouslly the people that are volunteering on the board to better the community and also the people of the community as well. The Opponents will obviouslly be the tax payers who are going to have to pay for this fitness center.
My Thoughts!
I think that the policy makers should make sure that there is a plan for how the community intends on spending the money exactly and that every option has been sought out before any money should be given out. I think that the policy makers should realize that this can better the community, because the community is full of crime and low income and also children who do have obesity issues. This fitness wellness center could bring positivety to the neighborhood. Another way that I would like for the policy makers to look at it is that the neighborhood is struggling already but has been making strides to get better and having this fitness facility in my eyes would only turn for the better of the community.

Reflections: Weeks: 9 and 10

The past two weeks were to jammed packed and to stressfull....
Week 9:
This week we were introduced to THOMAS. We also learned about advocacy and that let into our next assignment with bills of a topic that we chose. We also got into different groups to understand different topics of advocacy which I thought was pretty cool. I was in the group that talked about what is advocacy and we did a skit on showing the difference between advocacy and service.
week 10:
This week we watched a film called "Unnatural Causes". This was a film about people trying to make it and if and why there location and lifestyle makes them sick. I thought it was a good film to watch because it really opens up your eyes to the different lives people have to live and how priorities change through different phases people have to go through. I also liked the film because I could relate to it. Growing up when I was younger my family wasnt well off at all and I grew up in rough neighboorhood. But as time past my parents made it better financially so we got to fix up our house a little bit so now were a little better off even though I still live in the same neighboorhood I know what its like to live at the bottom and middle class stages and from first hand experience there is a definite change between the two.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and see ya Monday!

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 7 : My SMART Goal

Hey!!!!!

Welcome back to another week of Eco-Chic!

Smart Goal:

My smart was to walk to school every single day whether or not it rains or shines, and I have to say the weather was really nice this week! I achieved my goal and it has became a habit so its pretty easy to do now.

Challenges/Successes

As far as challenges go...I had ZERO! I enjoy walking to school and it has been a big help getting my energy up in the morning.

Feelings?

I felt pretty happy everyday...Walking to school made me feel pretty good and more energized so I hope that continues.

What did I learn?

I learned that I should start picking up my walking pace because I know I am slow walker, but I realized this last week that im EXTREMELY slow when it comes to walking and I kinda just mosey along. So will try to to pick up the pace when I walk to school from now on.

Future plan?

I will be modifying my Eco-Chic lifestyle change a little bit...I have been having some personal issues so I am also adding that I am quitting drinking and staying sober until Dec 31st. Also I will be eating one salad for a meal once a day as well as keeping my old goal of walking to school every day.
Until next time have a good one everyone!

Advocacy Project: Healthy People/THOMAS

My Healthy People 2010 goal of interest
- My focus for my advocacy project is going to be focused on: Improve health, fitness, and quality of life through daily physical activity.

- Objective: Reduce the proportion of adults who engage in no leisure-time physical activity. Target: 20 percent. Baseline: 40 percent of adults aged 18 years and older engaged in no leisure-time physical activity in 1997 (age adjusted to the year 2000 standard population).

Progress Quotient Chart
According to the progress quotient chart the no leisure time/no physical activity for 18+ is moving towards its goal by 15%, and regular physical (moderate or vigorous) is also moving towards its goal by 6%. Moderate physical activity by kids in grades 9th-12th is moving away from target by 25%. Vigorous activity for grades 9th-12th has also moved away from its goal by 10%. And participation in daily physical activity in grades school 9th-12th has also moved away from its goal by 5%. The most recent data collection was in 2003 so this data is about 6-7 years old.

Opportunities and Challenges
One the biggest challenges is that people have changed their lifestyle. Back in the 20th century daily life involved a lot of activities such as yard work (mowing lawn etc). Until a time came where chronic diseases and other bad health ailements supposedly arose from this type of lifestyle. Opportunities for professional development have increased within the field. The challenges are the lack of evidence for selected populations for physically active programs for them.

Disparities
According to the table White non-hispanic has the best rate for no leisure time and physical activity within people of 18+ years. American Indian have the worse and are at a percent of 50-99% of non active. The second group with the lowest physical activity rate is Hispanic/Latino group with a percent rate of no activity of 10-49 percent. The scale is basically the same or not specific enough also for all categories.

Emerging issues
The biggest emerging issue that still exists is if physical activity is the “pillar” to stop and prevent chronic disease and also to help stop/aid in mental illnesses.

Read 'n' Seed 4: Third Quarter of Book "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

Welcome back to another post of Read n Sead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This time around I read 82 pages and covered sections 3 and 4. Section 3 focused on Obesity and Business while Section 4 focused on Obesity and the Government.

Section 3: I touched a little on this segment with my last report but I thought it would be a good idea to somewhat refresh the memory again because section focuses on alot of the same points I covered last time. The start of section 3 brings up the current interests of businesses and what consumers are easier to advertise to and what consumers are more susceptible to there advertisements. To make things a little more sound., last report I had mentioned that food marketers are going to market the food regardless if its healthy or not. Which bring me to my next point that is brought up in this section. Self regulation...the reason the book brings this up and I also have to agree that people are responsible for there choices they make. The book talks about that people are in charge of the decisions they make and yet even though the market may target the less fortunate and people with more needs but in the end it is there choice to whether or not they eat the right foods or not. This section also brings up The Self Regulation Framework, which is a table to measure out the mixed messages in the marketing for food and relating it obesity. The two different modes are prevention and promotion. Promotion in this framework is linked to hot while prevention is linked to cold/thin. The framework is basically listeing off things that relate to overeating and habits that go along with over eating and obesity while prevention is related to thinness and things such as restrain and control to control your weight. The rest of the section talks about different weight loss methods and prices and things that people need to consider if they are going to go through with surgeries.

Section 4:

This section focuses on obesity and the government. The beginning of this talks about the infrastructure of society on obesity. Obesity has made its mark on society and its been established here in the US. According to the book the infrastructure that the authors are talking about that has caused our nation to become obese is the over supply of food, an increased supply of processed foods, the growing supply of cheaper foods, and also the marketing and ways media advertise predominetly to children because they are more suceptible to bad food choices, especially in schools where alot of vending machines have been placed.

This section also brings up different formulas as the BMR, which is the basal metabolic rate, which in english is the daily calories your body burns at rest. The book then talks about how important this concept is, which I agree because people need to understand that your body can only do so much without exercise than after that ( all the extra calories turns into extra weight). I think its very important that this subject is brought up in the book.

The next part of the section talks about the future trends of obesity, and how even though many different attempts to battle the disease of obesity will probably get worse. Obesity is the second leading cause of death in the US and its scary to read that. I think as a country we have a long way to go but I think its very imprtant that people try to understand nutrition better for there own health and to help educate our future children because they are the most vunerable.

Summary:

I think both sections are very important and have a huge impact on society. We as a nation need to start recognizing what these companies are doing and try to help educate people to try to solve this obesity epidemic especially for the children growing up.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 6 : My SMART Goal

This week i wrote a peom for my lifestyle change post. I was going to rap this to a beat and post it in a video but my camera went dumb on me...

My goals to walk to school all 5 days of the week /
And to make sure it aint boring my ipod is always on the beat /
Listening to the greatest music knodding my head to the rhyme /
My biggest challenge I faced this week was getting to school on time /
Because For some reason my body just didn’t want to wake up /
But than my stomach started growling so it didn’t take much /
To hop right out of bed and take on the eco chic /
Lifestyle challenge that we blog about every week/
And next week wont be any different im doing the same thing /
Whether it snows bad or I gotta walk to school in the rain /
Because Im successful so far on this journey for a change /
And im going to stay strong every week all the way to the end /
And what I learned this week is that I gotta get more sleep /
So I got enough energy to survive and I be able sit up in my seat /
So until next time that I see you all in class /
Have a good week stay happy not mad/

Reflections: Weeks 7 and 8

Week 7

In week 7 we watched the documentary "Green". It was a documentory done by a grad student and it was essentailly about how chemical plants produce "cancer alleys" in little small towns. The movie gave a good insite into how people have to live and change there lives in those areas. We also did a little mock argument which I thought was good because you got to hear both sides and see what people came up with. Also I went to the smoking forum and it was very informative and interesting to see what people had to say and there views about the issue. I also got to learn that the facewash I am using can cause harmful effects to me so I quit using it.
Week 8
This week we watched a documentory called "Thirst". I thought it was very interesting and it was about the privitzaton of water companies. This documentory made me think alot about smaller towns and things they have to through that I probably dont have to go through because I live in a big city. I did get emotional when the suprivisor left. You could tell he loved that place and the people and he worked for the citizens of there home town not for the money. We also did an eye opener about junking and thrift stores and it really opened up my eyes to a whole new view of thrift stores.
What I learned?
I learned alot. I learned that I personally have to work on how I veiw people before I pass judgement. I always say that I dont judge people I let people judge themselves and I accept them for who they are. But subconcioussly I think I still pass judgement without knowing it. I also learned that thrift stores and awesome places to shop. I also learned about more of the struggles that small towns have to go through and how twisted corparate companies can be.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 5: My SMART Goal

Smart Goal?
My smart goal was to walk to school all 5 days of the week. This week I did an awesome job and achieved my goal.
Successes or Challenges
The week was a success. The weather was pretty good for the most part. The most challenging part was walking home on Monday after class when it started getting dark again and it was colder to, but otherwise it wasnt that bad. In that case I walked alot faster than I normally do.
Feelings?
The feelings I had this week were different for different days. One day I actually felt like dancing and I had my ipod so I had to bust out some moves....haha. Another day I was pretty happy and proud of my mom getting her new promotion. And other days I again walked to school angry because of my ex gf bothering me.
In closing...
I learned that walking definately helps out letting out the emotion or anger that I get and helps me relax. For next week I am going to stay on this plan and MAY even have a different way of posting for this blog... we will see though. depends how creative I want to get. Until next time have a good one.

Eye Opener: Junk In the Brain

Part 1

Definitions:

Antique/Antiquing: shopping activity, woodworking, prank. I found these at wikipedia.

Junk/Junking : Accoring to Urban Dictionary junking means a type of dance. I also looked up junk/junking at freedictionary and it said discarded items, worthless items etc.

Flea market : According to answers.com a flea market is somewhere that people can buy and or sell goods, usually second hand items. Also the origin of its name is in dispute where it originated.

Thrift Shop: According to answers.com thrift shop is a place to buyused articles of clothing or other items and the profits usually go to a charity or an organization.

Upcycling : According to answers.com upcycling is process where old items or recylced items can be reused or made into new items again.

Resale Shop: According to wikipedia resale shops are basically charity shops, where second hand stuff is usually sold for a organization or a charity.

Part 2

1. I think that all these terms do go along with enviromental health. the reasons why I think this is because they are all eniromental aspects. An example is a thrift store that sells second hand clothing. In the winter some people may not be able to afford a warm coat but stores like these can provide that for people. Also from the above list such as antuquing or flea markets, its basically keeping items and products in motion instead of just throwing them out to waste they get "recylced" in a sense and become property or a possesion to someone else who needs it.

2. The goodwill in Duluth is a good local resource for a resale shop, antiquing, junking, thrift shop, and also upcylcing. The contact info is 700 Garfield AvenueDuluth,MN 55802Phone: (218) 722-6351http://www.goodwillduluth.org/.

The Flea Market in Duluth that I found is Annual the 2nd Sunday In August.
Lake Superior College, 2101 Trinity RoadDuluth, MINNESOTA, 55811USA
Weather at Studebaker Drivers Club Swap Meet Flea Market and Classic Car Show
Phone
218.722.8533

3. I dont really do to much of this to be honest. When I was younger though and I still had my cabin I use to get real excited to go to the Flea Market in Annandale, Mn. Otherwise for example this weekend for halloween I went to a thrift store for some stuff. I guess I dont really go to any thrift stores because I dont like shopping much in general and I am just a busy guy in general.

Part 3

My first junk project the I thought was real awesome was this reused Ginger Ale wall decoration. I just think its a really cool design and its something that you dont see everyday.

My second junk project was a thermos bottle lamp shade. I thought this was really cool also because it has a really cool design and also has a real cool vintage look to it.

My third junk project is a project about black and white items. I like this one because it has a good meaning and basically about Michael Jacksons song Black or White and how colors dont matter.

Read 'n' Seed 3: Second Quarter of Obesity , Business and Public Policy

Back again.
In this quarter of the book I read 59 pages. A little less than last time but I didnt want to cut into the next section. I finished part two of the book and entered into part 3 of the book.

Main Topics I read about..
-The market impact of obesity
-Businesses and obesity
- Different messages in the Marketing about food and obesity
-Weight control
-Health Insurance and Public Policies

Summary of the Sections:
-Starting off my summary of what I read the first part talked about how obesity affected wages. Such as how people would get paid differently if they were obese or not. Which I think is wrong. I think that people are people and should be treated the same regardless or there size. They also compare obese workers with hispanic and black males and females to see if there is any difference or correlation. The correlation found was hispanic males and females and black females that were obese got paid less than black or white males that were obese.
-The next part that I read talked about how marketing and businesses interest consumers with food. It also talks about how food businesses promote and distribute food regardless if its healthy or not.
-Weight Control was in the next section and talked about the different methods for weight control and different surgeries there are to help with weight loss. It also talks about the policies behind the surgerys and also the medical costs and dangers with surgerys.
Why Its Important?
The reason why this is so important is because it effects everyone. I mean if we realize alot of companies dont really necesarily care if they are truly supplying healthy food or no, its more just for the money. Also for people that are thinking about surgery or other weight loss techniques these sections do provide that. I'll be honest I got kind of bored in this quarter of the book. Hopefully next quarter will be better.

Share and Voice: Smoking Forum Meeting Policy Meeting!

Holla...I attended tonights smoking forum and saw some other classmates there to so thats neat. I guess I wanted to take this time to express more of how I felt about the forum as a whole and express my opinion about certain people that were there. First off...the one thing that bothered me right away is the hippie guy goes up and starts ranting about his rights to smoke...yet he admits smoking is bad for him..so my question is, if you know its bad why are you trying to advocate for it to be allowed on campus? Secondly he kept contradicting himself, by saying that having this ban on campus is not helping the cleanliness or health of anyone on campus its only making it worse..That doesnt make any sense to me. Basically in my eyes the kid should have saved his breath for another cigerette maybe. Also another thing that bothered me is you can tell who the smokers are. No offense to them at all but the school is trying to help students and there health. And I got kinda upset when these students who smelt like smoke and had bags under there eyes and barely could breath well enough to speak into the mic could only ask about the surveys and if they were valid and about this new "trend" UMD is taking on. I think they need to get more educated on the topic because its not a trend. Its been a long process to clear the smoking from campus. I think the smokers should quit worrying about there rights that they dont have because smoking is banned from school and maybe try to realize that what they do actually affects other peoples health because I can gauruntee that people who do not smoke dont affect smokers health. Just a thought. Thats my rant for the night. Until next time have a good one and stay unsick!(my links are still not working, sorry for the inconvenience)

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 4: My SMART Goal

My goal..... is to walk to school all school days..so 5 days in a row. This week went well, it sprinkled here and there but I handled it. I did succeed in maintaing my goal and the challenges were just the weather...I am not excited about the cold weather at all. My strategies was wearing my huge jacket and letting that be my rain coat and it worked pretty well.
Feelings?! I had lots of them this week...I guess since this is a blog I can say whatever I want right? Well... I broke up with my ex gf about a month ago and it seemed everyday before I walked to school she would post something on facebook or text me something to make me angry. So I spent a lot of my week walking to school angry, but walking home I wasnt to angry because it wore off by the time I had to walk home.
I learned this week that being prepared for the weather makes it alot easier to walk to school. My goals for next week are the same and if the weather is bad I am going to continue my strategy. Til next time! Ps sorry my fonts are boring looking. Something is wrong with my page and I have no options for my fonts.

Eye Opener: Enviromental Working Group

SHOCKING and scary.... The cosmetic item I typed in was Clearasil Oil Control Acne Wash (my links still are not working) because I really couldnt think of anything else I use thats cosmetic. The one thing that got my attention right away was my hazard score was 7 out of 10. Thats a high hazard....Its very shocking to me because I thought face wash was suppose to be a good thing. The cleanser was also linked to developemental/reproductive toxicity, violations and restrictions and warnings, allergies, irritation to skin, lungs. Also there are 80% of different face washes that are at lower risk than what I have. So I may be using the wrong kind. Overall, this is scary and I am going to probably throw the bottle of it in the trash. I am glad that I am blessed with semi ok skin and dont have to wash it really ever. But I still dont like the fact that this product has alot of dangers.

Reflections: Weeks 5 and 6

Week 5:
This week we watched "Future of Food". It gave me a completely different insight into coorpertaions and farming, because being from a big city I dont know much about it and you would probably never see me farming or anything of the sort. Not saying I dont respect what they do, Cause I absolutely do. I believe farmers are a big piece to being the heart of our country. Coming back to the video...I dont get mad often, honestly I rarely get mad at all because it takes so much for me to get mad... watching this video literally drew tears from me and clenched fists. I dont know how someone could rip apart families lives and all there hardwork so they can sip there mocha's on a boat. Makes me ferious. I dont know anything about farming and being a big city kid the most I gotta do is mow a small lawn compared to the acres of land farmers take care of. I just dont get it. On a better note...that snack was awesome. Thats the first time I have even had Nuttella and its really good.

Week 6: I was not able to attend this class. Yet I did find and watch the assigned movie for class "Diet For a New America" It astonishes me that Mr. Robbins did not take his fathers fame and go on his own and try his own things. I do think its really cool though that he went out to explore. To comment on the video probably one of the scariest things I have ever seen is where the blood and the fat seperate and you see the clump of fat on the blood in the tube. Its like a huge reality check for myself. I do eat decently healthy I think but now I really want to watch what exactly im putting in my body. I mean comparing the 10 percent of protein that China consumes compared to the US we eat 70 percent. The food group thing makes me mad because of what we talked about the week before in class, that its not that accurate. It makes me mad that the food groups is based on sales and not education. I mean cmon! As a nation we have an obese problem and its like people dont care to do anything about it. It always about money. I think the food groups should change into something more accurate created by a non corpaeration, maybe created by health educators who specialize in nutrition.
I thought when he showed the example of fat. That was kind of disgusting but a good example for people to have a good vision. I think its scary that people eat so much during the week and dont know that much about how to actually eat instead of making huge meals each time. And to to think a heart attack happens every 32 seconds...Thats why I feel like I have to help make a change because it seems like noone else will, and thats why I changed what I wanted to do in my life.
Watching the animal cruelty part was hard...I do love meat but it hard now thinking about what the animals have to go through. I know I wouldnt like it if I was a pig and I had a small confined area to live.
I think the video overall is a good video to get alot of good information from. Cant wait to be in class!

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 3: My SMART Goal

My smart goal is to walk to school every day. This has been the most difficult week I have had to deal with. I have been fighting the H1N1 and this defintaly goes down as my bodies worse 5 things I have had to deal with in my lifetime. Its just miserable, there is no words to explain it. I just got out of the hospital on Monday with breathing complications and am sentenced to lay down some more, which is boring but ok in a sense that I feel I just ran 5 miles when I stand up off my couch to walk to the kitchen or something. On a brighter note....This flu should be gone soon and I can go back to my normal life eventually. Well I hope. I learned this week that even though you keep washing your hands that REST is also very important. I myself dont get alot of rest on a normal day because my schedule with school, hockey and music has me constantly going and I usually do not get to sleep til 3 am on most days if im lucky. So to all those out there take the time to rest. I didnt do so great at accomplishing my goal this week because of my sickness. Next week I plan to get right back at it and finish the semester strong. With that take care everyone until next time!

Share @ Voice: F as in Fat 2009

Here is the link. F as in Fat.
This article with these statistics is startling. To be honest I was just searching the web looking for data because I got motivated because of the book I am reading. I came across this website and was absolutely stunned. According to this article obesity rates in adults didnt even decrease in any states this last year but INCREASED in 23 states....If you click on the link you can look at each state and find the percentage of children obesity and adult obesity rates per state.
Just a quick fact , Minnesota has the 31st highest rate of obesity in America. I guess thats not to bad considering there is 50 states. but seriouslly ... SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!!!! The hardest part of this is that I have a neighboor who lives right across the ally from me back at home in Minneapolis where I am from and he is heavily obese. It scares me because I know whats going to happen if his parents dont help make a change.  Until than have a good one.

Read 'n' Seed: First Quarter of Book "Obesity, Buniness and Public Policy"

There are 6 parts in my book and I covered two of them which is 70 pages of the 250 pages. First I am going to talk about the signifigant things that I learned throughout the two parts that I cov ered. First off obesity is a trend that started in the 1970's!. Also the The World Health Organization also know as WHO says that in the year of 200 there were 300 million adults who were obese. 300 million...wow. Another fact is the According to the New York Times in 2006 medical costs for obesity were about $100 billion per year..
Supply and Demand is also covered right away. The book talks about how technology increases and food is alot easier to supply than can become cheaper and more abundance in product than there is more food for people to get. According to the book the supply curve is is shifting to the right , which means that food prices are going down and consumption is increasing. Also another point made is the increase in food supply is because of our switch to processed food.
Another thing I learned is that Government plays a role by setting rules that allow the whole function of food processing to be safe...hmm
Also the Department of Health in cities have to check diners and such to make sure there are up to par on there cleanliness.
The book also starts to get into the actual debate on obesity and whether or not its the individual, government or business.
The first part talks about the spread of obesity and that in the early 1960's the average American Male weighed in at 168 pounds. The same time frame the average women weighed in at about 142 pounds. Today the average male is 180 pounds and the female averages 152 pounds . (page 15) Going off of this the book also talks about how the obersity epidemic is spreading beyond the US and other countries are adopting our lifestyle as technology is building in there countries. The authors main thoughts about this is that knowledge as well as lifestyle is is spreading. Cultures are converting with each other and so on.
According to a chart in the book source: OECD Health Statitistics (2000) The US has a percent of obesity rate at almost 30 percent.
Part 2
This part is titled Obesity and the individual
Right away in the first part of this portion of the book the authors wrote some startling data...Children obesity has almost doubled among children aged 2-5 years old old since the 1970s. It also talks about how type 2 diabetes is a ciritical consequence of childhood obesity. This portion of the book will be about mostly children obesity and the effects it has on them because they are unaware mostly of the future consequences of being obese. The other portion of the section also talks about how economic framework happens for children with weight problems. Such as the constraints like poverty, physical activity etc.
One point brought up in the book is why children may be in different weight classes is because children may have different ideals in what weight they want to be.
The chapter also talks about single women that are mothers and turn to cheaper foods such as fast food and how the governments implications on society can affect children. Even with media and advertising because children see these advertisements all the time.

Summary:
I think this is a very important topic and I am very passionate about it. I understand one of the biggest problems is the lack if knowledge people may have and how to feed there children. I think more knowledge and help should be provided for parents and teachers. I mean the only adds kids seem to know on tv is fast food diners and video games. I think we could change it by advertising physcial activies and encouraging them as well. I know alot of my friends who are bigger werent allowed to play sports. I think its ashame because your not allowing your kid an outlet to get some fitness in. I think this is very important because I know when I have children if I am blessed enough, I dont want them going through what I went through. These children are our future leaders and we should take it upon ourselves to help them and not just turn them away.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 2: My SMART Goal

Here we are into week 2 of the smart goals. My smart goal was to walk to school 4 out of the 5 days of the week. I did awesome on achieving my goal. I have been walking everyday actually and also walked to the grocery store, even though it was hard I felt alot better afterwards.
The strategies that helped me accomplish this was to dress for the weather. The challenges I faced was the cold weather. It sucked to be honest. But what made it easier if that I have a locker at school so bringing a jacket isnt a big deal so I could stay warm.
The feelings I experience were satisfaction, in knowing that I am helping the world and myself by walking to school.
I learned that all you need to do is focus on the goal and stay positive and you can be succesful.
My plans for next week...I am going to modify mine a little bit. Since I was able to walk everyday, I am going to continue that and vow to walk everyday to and from school for the remainder of the ten weeks through whatever kind of weather it may bring.
To everyone good luck!
